Temporary housing for seriously ill children and their families to almost double capacity

Edmonton… Edmonton’s Ronald McDonald House will be able to increase its bed numbers from 16 to 30 thanks to a $1.8-million Alberta government contribution to the Society for Children’s Oncology Family Services of Northern Alberta.“As a parent, I understand that dealing with a seriously ill child can be extremely difficult,” said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. “The funds provided to expand Ronald McDonald House will allow more families to access important services and support as needed.”

Ronald McDonald House provides affordable, temporary housing for families with seriously ill children who have traveled to Edmonton for critical medical treatment. Funds provided will assist with the expansion of the facility from 14,000 to 42,000 square feet. The project will also see the number of beds increase from 16 to 30 (with two that are fully wheelchair accessible), installation of an air conditioning system and development of an underground parking lot.

“The support from the provincial government, Ronald McDonald House Charities, corporate partners and individuals is critical to helping us make this campaign a success for families and children from across Alberta,” said Larry Mathieson, Executive Director for Ronald McDonald House Alberta. “Without this investment we could not provide a home away from home for many children from all corners of Alberta.”

Funds for the facility are provided as part of the provincial government’s Major Community Facilities Program. This two-year, $280-million lottery-funded community investment program helps municipalities, not-for-profit organizations and Aboriginal communities plan, upgrade or build major public-use facilities that enhance community life.
