Press Release: KRG contribution of $ 1 million for the new Isuarsivik Centre

Kuujjuaq, Québec, January 23, 2018 ─ Further to the substantial progress made by the Isuarsivik Treatment Centre planning for the construction and operation of a new regional recovery centre, and in related talks with the federal and provincial governments, the Kativik Regional Government (KRG) is announcing a $1-million contribution towards infrastructure costs. The KRG will provide this funding over a three-year period, specifically $350,000 in 2018 and 2019, and $300,000 in 2020.

The new Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre is expected to be fully operational in Kuujjuaq by 2020. It will allow:

• Access to culturally appropriate inpatient rehabilitation services for all Nunavimmiut with an annual capacity of up to 175 clients. The current annual accommodation capacity is only 45.
• Emergency admission and support for pregnant women and their families to prevent foetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
• Integration of a family approach to include the spouses and children of clients admitted to the rehabilitation program. This family approach will offer family and couple counselling and strengthen parental skills.
• Partnership with the judicial system to deploy the Court of Québec addictions treatment program (Programme de traitement de la toxicomanie de la Cour du Québec).

“Substance abuse issues impact on everyone in Nunavik,” recognized KRG Chairperson Jennifer Munick. “There really can be no doubt –as has already been pointed out by the Isuarsivik planners– that a new regional recovery centre is a symbol of the communities coming together to regain control over the region’s future, empower the population and protect our way of life.”

The KRG contribution will prove useful along with the important contributions to be received from Nunavik’s provincial and federal partners, as well as the Makivik Corporation, to help cover the capital costs of this project.
