Pregnant women should avoid use of certain anti-inflammatory drugs: Health Canada – CTV

TORONTO — Health Canada is advising women who are 20 weeks pregnant or longer not to use certain anti-inflammatory drugs, due to rare kidney complications in the baby.

The health agency is advising against the use of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) — such as acetylsalicylic acid, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and celecoxib — among women who are between 20 and 28 weeks pregnant, as these drugs “may cause rare but serious kidney problems in an unborn baby.”

“This can lead to low levels of amniotic fluid and possible complications, such as impaired lung maturation and loss of joint movement (limb contractures) in the newborn baby,”
