BOAT HARBOUR – Members of Pictou Landing First Nation lit a sacred fire and held a water ceremony on Monday in advance of work set to begin soon as part of the process to remediate Boat Harbour.
Pipe carrier Lawrence Herney lit the fire at Lighthouse Beach at 6 a.m., with cedar, sweet grass, sage and tobacco. Fire keepers tended to it throughout the day, until the closing ceremony at 5:30 p.m.
Members of the community were encouraged to make offerings of tobacco and prayers, with good intentions of healing the community.
Healer-in-training Tonya Francis led the ceremony, and said it provided the opportunity to spiritually offer prayers and positively connect with the land and water.
