Paid Family/Community Caregiver Pilot Project Concludes

The Paid Family/Community Caregiver (PFCG) Pilot Project that has been running in Behchoko, Dettah, Ndilo, Yellowknife, Tuktoyaktuk and Hay River will be concluding on March 31, 2024.

Under the PFCG pilot, in each community selected, seniors and persons with disabilities could choose either a community caregiver, a family member, or a friend to help them with household and other general tasks in their homes and around their community. Each applicant received up to four hours of help on a weekly basis. Community-based organizations coordinated the program in each community and provided funding that compensated the caregivers for their work.

The evaluation found that the service had benefits, particularly in small and remote communities, where it helped program users feel safer in their homes, kept them better connected to their communities and, overall, contributed to the goal of helping people age with dignity and in their own homes. Design work is underway for Continuing Care support services like those delivered through the pilot to support aging in place.
