This past November, I received the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case from His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston. This award honours people who have made an outstanding contribution to the goal of equality for women and girls in Canada.
Upon receipt of this medal, I have been reflecting on my 35 years of feminist labour, carried out alongside other women, to end violence against women and girls. I’ve been asking: What has changed for women being violated and abused since I interned in 1980 as a social worker at a transition house in Kitchener-Waterloo?
In Nova Scotia, the media has drawn attention to this issue, ranging from online violence against female MLAs to the dire lack of affordable housing for women and children leaving transition houses.
