Aboriginal Health Care Conference Challenges, Issues and Advances in Cross-Cultural Care – Ontario’s Aboriginal Experience

September 24-26, 2008

Valhalla Inn, 1 Valhalla Road, Thunder Bay

The health and well-being of Aboriginal peoples in Ontario is influenced by many factors, such as culture, geography, an aging population, shifting demographics and the challenge of blending traditional healings and contemporary medicine. Consequently, a collective, community approach is required to develop a framework that provides appropriate care. This conference will explore the latest challenges, solutions and best practices in Aboriginal health care across the province. Building on the success of last year’s program, Building Collaborative Partnerships for Health Prosperity, this year’s event will highlight innovations developed to improve the health status of Aboriginal peoples.

Conference topics include:
• Opening Keynote Speaker: Michael Howlett, President and CEO, Mental Health Commission of Canada
• Pre-conference Workshop: Aboriginal Cultural Perspectives on Health, Wellness and Spirituality: Understanding History to Understand Today’s Challenges
• Current Policy Directions
• Recruitment of Aboriginal Health Care Workers
• Various concurrent Workshop Sessions
• Healers’ Network
• Panel Discussion: Developing Sustainable Networks

In attendance will be health care providers from hospitals and health agencies across the province. The conference will feature Exhibit Booths and a Poster Display showcasing innovation and best practices in
Aboriginal health care.
