Press Release

Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh, along with leadership and staff at Grand Council Treaty #3, have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Treaty #3 through regular meetings with government health officials. Although case counts have levelled off in the Treaty #3 territory, they have yet to enter a downward trend as seen in southern Ontario.
“While it is true that the Omicron variant causes less severe symptoms, we must continue to do our part to slow down its spread,” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh. “We must continue washing our hands, social distancing, and getting vaccinated to help our health professionals slow down COVID-19. The sooner we get the cases trending downwards, the sooner we can join the rest of the province in reopening.”
Grand Council Treaty #3 continues to coordinate with communities on COVID-19 prevention measures including an increasing focus on mental health. As pandemic stress and anxiety, feelings of alienation and aimlessness, and seasonal depression are of significant concern communities and Grand Council Treaty #3 have been placing mental health as a priority in their activities and advocacy.
“I know many people are having a difficult time right now but there is hope for a better spring and summer,” added Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh. “A small effort such as wearing a mask or washing your hands regularly can go a long way towards ridding our communities of COVID-19. If we can all hold on just a little bit longer, I am confident in a few months we can get back to doing the things we love with the people we love.”
The leadership and staff of Grand Council Treaty #3 continue to adhere to public health guidelines and will continue to do so until the Treaty #3 communities report no active cases.
