“Nursing – The Health of Our Nation” – celebrating National Nursing Week May 9 – 15, 2011

Monday, May 09, 2011

National Nursing Week May 9 to 15, 2011 celebrates the quality health care services nurses provide in the Northwest Territories and across Canada.

This years’ theme for celebrating nursing in Canada is Nursing – The Health of Our Nation. Together, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners provide health services to the residents of the NWT.”Nurses are an essential part of any health care system. In the Northwest Territories, we rely on more than 600 nursing professionals on the front lines and behind the scenes to promote health and provide services such as home care, public health and education,” said Minister of Health and Social Services, Michael Miltenberger.

A priority in the Health and Social Services Action Plan, A Foundation for Change, is to enable the health and social services system to deliver services through the right providers in the right places. This includes the adjustment of staffing models to best utilize the skills of all staff – including enhancing the role of Nurse Practitioners – so as to benefit from their full scope of practice.

During National Nursing Week, Health and Social Services Authorities across the NWT will host a variety of events to recognize and thank the nurses in their communities.
