Starting June 1, a nurse practitioner will be working full-time at the community health centre in the Village of Mayo. The health centre will become the first in Yukon to be staffed by a nurse practitioner, who will join a team of three nurses already in place and will have the support of visiting physicians who will be in the community on a rotational basis.
Officials from the Department of Health and Social Services met with the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun and the Mayor and Council from the Village of Mayo on this new model of primary care. A community town hall to discuss the new model of care will be held for Mayo residents in May.
This is an exciting opportunity to build a new collaborative care model in Mayo that will enable the health care team to continue providing excellent quality care. The nurse practitioner will be able to provide more comprehensive care in the community, reduce the workload of physicians, reduce wait times for clients and increase the options for health care in the community.
