Northwestel Sponsors Kamatsiaqtuo Help Line

July 16, 2013

Northwestel has committed to assisting northern counseling services by sponsoring the Nunavut Kamatsiaqtut Help Line.

The company donated $1,000 in cash and more than $3,000 of in-kind telecommunications services to the Nunavut help line that provides contact services for people in northern Canada with issues ranging from depression and anger to suicidal thoughts.

“Northwestel recognizes the need to support mental health initiatives in northern Canada,” said Northwestel General Manager of Nunavut Operation Bertrand Poisson. “We hope that contributing to the help line brings assistance to those in need.”

The Kamatsiaqtut Help Line, now in its 33rd year, operates 5 hours per day, all year round. It also provides 16 hours of certification training to its numerous volunteers, who offer support in English, French and Inuktitut.

Northwestel’s donation will be earmarked for developing and delivering more training to the help line’s volunteers.

“The Kamatsiaqtut Help Line is very grateful for the support Northwestel is offering. These types of donations ensure that the support line remains available to anyone requiring assistance in the territory,” said Kamatsiaqtut Help Line Executive Director Sheila Levy.

The Help Line can be contacted in Iqaluit at 867-979-3333 or at 1-800-265-3333 in all other communities from 7:00 P.M. to 12:00 A.M. EST, 365 days per year.
