Health Quality Ontario says northern communities suffer from remoteness but also social factors that impact health
Nearly 300 kilometres separate Timmins from Sudbury. That’s the distance France Picotte has had to drive with her mothers and sisters-in-law when they needed radiation treatment or certain types of chemotherapy.
Her husband was preparing the make the journey 12 years ago, so he could see a heart specialist. He died before he got the chance.
Timmins has its own hospital, but lacks the specialty care to treat certain serious ailments, said Picotte, chair of the Métis Nation of Ontario.
Like many people in northern Ontario, Picotte’s friends and family must travel for hours to access essential health care.
