Norfolk General Hospital says its emergency department isn’t taking any patients and is diverting ambulances to other hospitals until 7 p.m. Monday because of COVID-19 related illnesses.

“This temporary reduction in hours is necessary and is beyond the control of the hospital and the physicians in our community,” read a statement from the Simcoe, Ont., hospital on Sunday evening.

“A contingency plan has been implemented to deal with the temporary reduction of service.”

The hospital said it “exhausted all options” and apologized for the shut down, saying it only did so “to ensure safe and quality care for our patients and clients.”

The hospital says anyone who has an urgent medical issue should call 911 or attend the following hospitals:

West Haldimand General Hospital, 75 Parkview Road, Hagersville
Brantford General Hospital, 200 Terrace Hill Street, Brantford
Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, 167 Rolph Street, Tillsonburg
Haldimand War Memorial Hospital, 400 Broad Street West, Dunnville
