NL Government: Minister Dempster Announces Funding for Age-Friendly Grants Program

April 26, 2018

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, announced today that 12 municipalities have been awarded Age-Friendly Community Grants totalling $90,000.

The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador (AFNL) Community Grants Program offers funding to incorporated municipalities, Indigenous governments and communities throughout the province to support them in planning for an aging population.

A full list of the projects and the funding they will receive can be found in the backgrounder below.

An age-friendly community is one where the physical and social environments enable individuals to live in a secure setting, enjoy health and continue to participate fully in society, regardless of age.

Budget 2018 supports the continued development of age-friendly communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This includes healthy living assessments that will provide seniors and their families with information to improve their overall health and quality of life and $300,000 for the Age-Friendly Transportation Project to support community-based transportation initiatives.

Budget 2018 also provides $56 million for the Seniors’ Benefit which benefits approximately 47,000 seniors and their families in Newfoundland and Labrador.
