NL Government: Latest Initiatives Approved as Part of Community Transportation Grant Program

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, today announced that four projects will receive Community Transportation Grants totaling $300,000.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Community Transportation Grant Program provides funding support to develop, implement and evaluate a community-based transportation program that is inclusive and accessible.
The four projects based in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador City, St. John’s and Stephenville, will enhance and expand community transportation services to increase inclusion and accessibility for people who experience barriers to transportation, including age, disability and geography, often in combination with low income.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Community Transportation Program builds on commitments of The Way Forward to deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Program will provide transportation to medical appointments, activities and events for community members who experience transportation restrictions such as mobility issues. | $90,000 |
| Labrador Friendship Centre | Happy Valley-Goose Bay | In support of the Seniors Van Project that provides affordable transportation services to seniors in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area. The van operates on a Monday-Friday schedule to help seniors and their caregivers attend medical appointments, shop, run errands and participate in community events. | $30,000 |
| Metrobus | St. John’s | In support of the Community Bus Service that was designed for the seniors market and persons with mobility issues. | $85,000 |
| Town of Stephenville | Stephenville | Establishment and implementation of the Stephenville Inclusive Transportation Service (SITS), a shared-ride public transportation service that will provide accessible door to door services within Stephenville and as far as Port au Port East and St. George’s. | $95,000 |
