Press Release
Nov 5th, 2024
We are deeply saddened by the loss of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, a former judge, senator and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission into residential schools in Canada. Sinclair passed away on Nov. 4 in Winnipeg at the age of 73 following a period of illness.
His legacy paved the path forward for how public organizations across Canada like Niagara Health responded to residential schools and the generational impact they continue to have on the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples. We continue to learn from and be inspired by the life and advocacy of Sinclair, whose leadership, experiences and work has deeply impacted the way Canadians understand colonialism and anti-Indigenous racism. In addition, his work in educating Canadians about Truth and Reconciliation has been imperative in understanding the past, the continued effects and harms to Indigenous peoples, and moving towards healing.
As we continue on our own path and journey to reconciliation at Niagara Health, Sinclair’s impact will continue to inspire and drive us forward.
