NFN Members 60+ Eligible for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccine

Press Release

The Ontario Ministry of Health has expanded eligibility for the publicly funded Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine to include Nipissing First Nation members and members of their household who are 60 years and older, including those in urban dwellings.

The RSV vaccine is a single dose for individuals 60 and over to reduce RSV-related infection. Studies have shown that the vaccine is over 82% effective.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but can affect the lungs and airways. In older adults, RSV can cause more serious respiratory infections and illnesses, and make chronic health problems worse.

The virus is spread from person to person, through sneezing or coughing. Symptoms of RSV include runny nose, sneezing, coughing, headache, and fever. Some individuals may experience more symptoms, including difficulty breathing, severe cough, and wheezing.
