New home, new outlook – The Chronicle Journal

A brand new three-bedroom home for a remote First Nation family, and a new approach to local development and job creation.

That was the takeaway this week as Sachigo Lake First Nation celebrated the construction of a house put together by a local crew of carpenters and aspiring tradespeople.

“The long term goal is for the young people in Sachigo Lake to take over the jobs in the community, including road maintenance, housing, and vehicle mechanical repairs,” Sachigo Chief Titus Tait said in a news release.

A family is to move in as soon as the house is connected to the band’s hydro system.

Tait said that should be soon.

Sachigo is a fly-in community of about 500 Oji-Cree located 425 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout.

Funding for the most recent new-home project was supported by a previously established revenue-sharing agreement between Sachigo and Thunder Bay-based North Star Air, which regularly flies to remote Northwestern Ontario communities.
