New Construction Manager Announced for Faro Mine Remediation Project

The Government of Canada is moving forward on the remediation of contaminated sites in the North to protect the health and safety of Indigenous people and Northerners while safeguarding the environment.
Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade, announced the funding agreement for the Faro Mine Interim Construction Manager has been issued to Parsons, Inc. This important step forward in the remediation of the Faro Mine site will protect the health and safety of local residents and the environment while working to maximize the socio-economic benefits for Yukon.
Parsons, Inc. will provide construction management services to the Faro Mine Remediation Project team for two years, with two optional one-year extensions. The company will be responsible for managing construction activities for immediate projects on the Faro Mine site. They will also be managing subcontracts and procurement using an approach that prioritizes Yukon and First Nation businesses and hires.

Quick facts
- The Faro Mine, located in central Yukon, is an abandoned lead–zinc mine that is one of the largest contaminated sites in Canada.
- The Faro Mine Remediation Project will address the environmental effects of 320 million tonnes of waste rock and 70 million tonnes of tailings.
- The contract is in effect until March 31, 2020 and has a total estimated value of $80,181,066.
- The interim construction manager will manage immediate construction activities on the site, including construction of the North Fork Rose Creek diversion, which will redirect the creek away from contamination on the site.
- A final Faro Mine remediation plan with full regulatory approval is expected by 2021. The major construction phase would start in 2022, and is expected to last 15 years. The site will continue to be monitored after the final clean up, to ensure that the remediation work is operating as designed.
