For Immediate Release:
Ottawa, ON (January 12, 2012) January 15-21, 2012 is National Non-Smoking Week. During this week, people from across Canada will be participating in activities to promote tobacco awareness and prevention. Pauktuutit will be participating in the launch of the Tobacco Has No Place Here Campaign, a campaign to denormalize tobacco use in Nunavut so that it is no longer considered a normal part of everyday life and behavior. The campaign initiative was developed by the Department of Health and Social Services of the Government of Nunavut with the help of committee members from Pauktuutit, NTI, QIA, CHRs and a community nurse. Together, the committee developed the message of “Tobacco Has No Place Here”. The campaign, which will be launched on January 15, 2012, includes a website, testimonial videos featuring 10 people from across the territory, posters, brochures and radio announcements. Pauktuutit joined this committee to continue the work of tobacco awareness and
prevention. Since 1994 Pauktuutit has produced high-quality information and counseling materials for use in schools and communities and continues to raise awareness of tobacco as a serious public health issue. Our Ancestors Never Smoked, a kit on sharing elders’ memories, wisdom and insights to promote tobacco reduction in Inuit communities is available upon request. Pauktuutit also has Public Service Announcements on tobacco use on Youtube. Information on smoking cessation can be found on the website www.Pauktuutit.ca
In Nunavik, there will be a regional local radio show where information will be given for tips on quitting smoking. If communities or school would like to arrange activities for National Non-Smoking Week they are encouraged to do so. For more information, you can contact Kathy Snowball at 819-964-2222.
