NAN Calls for Action on Housing

November 21, 2014

THUNDER BAY: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Deputy Grand Chief Les Louttit expressed support for housing and anti-poverty advocates calling for a federal approach to affordable and social housing at a rally in Thunder Bay today in recognition of National Housing Day:

“We have repeatedly called on the Government of Canada to address the appalling living conditions and housing shortages in our 49 First Nation communities, but we also recognize the growing need for safe, affordable housing for First Nation members while living in urban centres. Many NAN members who move to Thunder Bay face housing insecurity and homelessness due to discrimination in rental housing and a lack of housing options. We are calling on federal government to develop innovative new ways to support community development on-reserve, and we recognize the need for more affordable and social housing in urban centres that will support safer, healthier and more prosperous communities for all residents.”

NAN outlined how the chronic lack of housing and infrastructure has put NAN First Nations in crisis during a presentation to the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples in Ottawa on November 19.
