MKO and KIM to Host Engagement Session About Health Services in Leaf Rapids in Northern Manitoba

Treaty Five Territory, Thompson, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) Inc. and Keewatinohk Inniniw Minoayawin (KIM) are hosting an engagement session about health services in Leaf Rapids, Manitoba on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at 7 pm.

MKO and KIM are hosting this engagement session in response to concerns about the closure of the Leaf Rapids Health Centre and a related lack of access to primary health care.

Dr. Barry Lavallee and Dr. Yvette Emerson of Keewatinohk Inniniw Minoayawin will join Grand Chief Garrison Settee and other guests in the Leaf Rapids engagement session.

“MKO extends our appreciation to everyone who has been working on re-opening the Leaf Rapids Health Centre. I am aware the health centre re-opened on January 24, 2022,” shared Grand Chief Garrison Settee.

“While the health centre is now open, I’m still concerned about the ongoing provision of health care services for Leaf Rapids,” said Grand Chief Settee. “On January 12, I wrote to the Honourable Audrey Gordon asking for an urgent meeting about the situation in Leaf Rapids. While my email has been acknowledged, we do not have a meeting scheduled to discuss the situation. I once again urge our Minister of Health to meet with my office to discuss and plan next steps in support of the health and well-being of our Northern Manitoba citizens.”

Residents of Leaf Rapids are invited to provide input and feedback on their views about health care in their community. Some of the input will be shared at our engagement session on January 26, 2022.
