Misinformation regarding RSV Vaccine

Press Release

February 26, 2025

The Department of Health is aware of misinformation circulating on social media regarding Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) prevention programs, including references to a vaccine program previously offered in Nunavik.

The Department would like to reassure Nunavummiut that immunization programs in Nunavut are safe, follow national recommendations, and are covered under the Nunavut Health Care Plan.

Informed consent from parents or caregivers is mandatory for children’s vaccinations. Healthcare providers ensure all questions and concerns are thoroughly addressed during the consultation.

In Canada, all vaccines undergo rigorous safety assessments before approval to guarantee their safety and effectiveness. In Nunavut, the Nirsevimab vaccine is offered at birth as part of routine public health programming. This initiative aims to reduce severe respiratory tract infections and protect infants when they are most vulnerable.

Routine immunizations are strongly recommended for all infants in Nunavut.

Since the introduction of the Nirsevimab vaccine, RSV cases in Nunavut have significantly declined. The Department of Health wants to emphasize that RSV vaccines provide strong protection for our communities.

For additional information regarding immunizations, please visit the Government of Nunavut website.
