First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle – class action compensation update
On July 26, 2023, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) issued a letter-decision announcing the approval of the revised Final Settlement Agreement. The landmark agreement, totalling more than $23 billion, will compensate more than 300,000 First Nations children and families who experienced discrimination through the First Nations Child and Family Services Program and the narrow application of Jordan’s Principle. On August 16, 2023, the Federal Court of Canada extended the deadline for class members to opt out of the class action until October 6, 2023. Read the decision here.
