Ref. #2-3799
Ottawa, Ontario (May 15, 2013) – The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement today:
“At this time, I would like to extend my thanks to Ms. Katherine Nukon of Old Crow, Yukon, who has served as a valued member of the Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board since its inauguration in 2010. Ms. Nukon was instrumental in contributing to the formation of the Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board and provided strong leadership and advice. Ms. Nukon has resigned from the NNC Advisory Board for personal reasons.
The Advisory Board is a key feature of the Nutrition North Canada (NNC) program, providing an invaluable northern perspective. Since my appointment as Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, I have received informed, thoughtful advice on what’s working with NNC and what improvements need to be made. Program governance, country food, food eligibility, the direct order option and nutrition education initiatives are all topics on which the Advisory Board passes on Northerners’ input.
The NNC Advisory Board is expected to meet June 3–4, 2013, in Ottawa. I look forward to an update from the Board following the meeting and to ongoing guidance from the Board members as Nutrition North Canada continues to work to ensure that Northern communities have increased access to perishable healthy food.
I encourage Northerners to continue to share their thoughts and suggestions with their fellow Northerners who serve on the NNC Advisory Board. They can be contacted at nncadvisoryboard@aandc.gc.ca or visit http://nutritionnorthcanada.ca.”
