Minister Lightstone tests positive for COVID-19

Press Release

14 February 2022

The Government of Nunavut’s (GN) Minister of Human Resources and Finance, Adam Lightstone, today released the following statement:

“This weekend members of my household and I received positive test results for COVID-19. I am experiencing mild symptoms and will be isolating until at least February 18. I will continue to perform my duties remotely, throughout my isolation period.

Like many Nunavummiut, I have been following public health measures to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19. I have been diligent in maintaining physical distancing, wearing a mask in public, limiting shopping, and most challenging, minimizing visits or visitors to my home. I am fully vaccinated and have had my booster shot.

No one wants to get COVID-19.  This positive result shows how, even with our best efforts, the Omicron variant increases the risk of infection. What we can do is ensure that we minimize as much as possible the chances of getting the virus and as important, test when developing symptoms, and carefully follow all the isolation guidelines once we receive a positive result.

The Department of Human Resources has implemented measures to reduce the risks of COVID-19. I urge all GN employees to work from home whenever possible and to hold meetings via Teams, as much as possible.

I want to thank the amazing team at the Department of Health who have been working tirelessly to manage this outbreak. I would also like to express gratitude to the many people I see extending their support to fellow community members in isolation as well as those who continue to follow public health measures to help reduce the spread and keep our communities safe. If you have not yet received your COVID-19 vaccine, please get your vaccine and booster as soon as possible.

Anyone who develops COVID-19 symptoms is advised to call the COVID hotline at 1-888-975-8601 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. EDT or notify their community health centre right away by telephone. Please do not go to the health centre in person.”
