Mikisew Cree First Nation declares State of Emergency over suicide – MIX 103.7

A State of Emergency is being declared by the Mikisew Cree First Nation.

Chief Billy-Joe Tuccaro and Council made the decision yesterday evening (April 24) after multiple suicides and suicide attempts among its members in Fort Chipewyan.

“We have submitted a band council resolution to Indigenous Services Canada’s First Nation and Inuit health branch, and AHS to request immediate support and long-term sustainable funding,” says Tuccaro.

Tuccaro and Council are also requesting a mental health crisis response team to come to the region.

“We appeal to members to utilize this opportunity when extra mental health counselors are in Fort Chipewyan. The crisis team are qualified counselors working for other First Nations in Alberta and are in the community to listen to you.”
