The goal of these workshops is to improve the health of the Métis community by effecting positive lifestyle changes through education, information and support. Workshop sessions will focus on health and wellness promotion, cultural health and wellness, disease prevention and capacity development in a holistic, culturally based way. The event is open to the public, everyone is welcome to attend. The first session will take place on Saturday, June 19th from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre (741 3rd Street, Nanaimo), and will be a celebration of the health enhancement initiative. The community will be introduced to the project and given an opportunity to sign up for programs that are of interest to them. Subsequent workshops will focus on chronic diseases and conditions, and information and management strategies will be provided by health professionals.

MIMN is also hosting a ‘Health Promotion Support Circle’, a group that will meet biweekly to encourage and motivate community members to make informed choices and changes to their health goals and to participate in healthy activities and events. Individual and team activities (i.e. swimming, skating, yoga, dragon boat racing, hiking, 5-10 km walk/run, etc.) will be organized for the group to participate in. An interactive website and newsletter will also be developed, where the group’s health achievements, both large and small, will be celebrated. The first Support Circle will be on Wednesday, June 9th at 7:00 pm in meeting room A at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre.

The Mid Island Métis Community Health Enhancement Initiative will provide a wonderful opportunity for Métis people, their families and friends, to gather and to meet health and wellness service providers, learn more about making healthy lifestyle changes, and to meet other community members with similar goals. There will be something for the whole family (all ages welcome), so don’t miss out!
