November 3, 2009 — These guidelines have been developed to inform Métis Nation of Ontario employees and volunteers about the H1N1 influenza. This information has been prepared to contribute to the control and spread of the virus. Further branch-specific information will be relayed to ensure the safety of employees, volunteers and clients. This information will evolve and change as new information becomes available. We encourage you to consult www.fightflu.ca frequently for current, updated information.According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, the H1N1 flu virus is new strain of pandemic influenza which is different than the seasonal flu. People have no natural immunity to protect against this virus. The H1N1 flu virus emerged in April 2009 and surveillance of its spread shows that it is affecting more young and healthy people than the regular seasonal flu, which normally affects seniors and young children. People with underlying medical conditions and pregnant women may be at a greater risk for severe illness.
The Métis Nation of Ontario has developed a stand-alone policy on Pandemic Influenza. Once approved by the PCMNO, this policy will be added to the MNO Policy and Procedures Manual.
In the meantime, to ensure that appropriate, accurate messaging is circulated, do not create any communication regarding H1N1 influenza for distribution in your community. Refrain from sending any information via email or otherwise distributing to clients that has not been approved by the MNO Director of Communications. If you require assistance with developing an announcement or poster regarding an information session or vaccination clinic, please consult with your supervisor or manager.
