MONTREAL, June 26, 2013 – Caregiving costs for persons with mental illness added up to an estimated $3.9 billion in Canada alone in 2006. Many frontline caregivers for adults with mental illness are family members, and without these family caregivers, the cost of caregiving would skyrocket in Canada. But who cares for the caregivers?
The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) will release 41 detailed recommendations aimed at supporting family caregivers who provide crucial help to relatives living with mental illnesses.
The National Guidelines for a Comprehensive Service System to Support Family Caregivers of Adults with Mental Health Problems and Illnesses contain specific recommendations intended to improve the capacity of caregivers to provide the best possible care to adults with mental illness, while reducing the risk of the caregivers becoming “collateral casualties” of mental illness.
