Men switched at birth to meet with federal health minister – CTV News

Nov 21, 2016

Three of the four men switched at birth in a northern Manitoba federally-run hospital in 1975 are meeting with the federal health minister this afternoon in Winnipeg.

“Then we’ll have an idea if we have a go-forward plan or if things go south,” said Eric Robinson, Manitoba’s former aboriginal affairs minister who is speaking on behalf of the families, and will be at the meeting. Robinson said Luke Monias, one of the men from Garden Hill First Nation who was switched at birth in June in 1975, will not be at the meeting due to personal circumstances.

Robinson said he plans to ask Health Minister Jane Philpott to launch a federal investigation into what happened at Norway House Indian Hospital in 1975 that led to two sets of babies being switched at birth. He also will request a commitment from the federal government to fully fund the counselling for the men and their families until it’s no longer necessary.
