Media Advisory: First Nations Feeding the Poor at Our Place This Friday

Hundreds of First Nations Volunteers Will Come Together to Serve Greater Victoria’s Homeless and Most Vulnerable Citizens

Victoria, British Columbia – Nov. 22, 2012 – A convoy of more than 50 vehicles and trucks loaded with food and warm clothing is on its way to Victoria for a traditional First Nations feast and giveaway at Our Place Friday.

Members of the Ahousaht First Nation and other Nuu-chah-nulth communities are bringing thousands of pounds of donated food, warm clothes, coats, blankets, underwear, winter footwear and toiletries to be distributed throughout the day to those most in need in downtown Victoria. The two traditional First Nations feasts will be accompanied by drumming and entertainment.

“We plan to Feed and Give from the Heart to those who need it the most,” said Curtis Dick, Chief Councillor of the Ahousaht First Nations. We appreciate what Our Place does for people from our community. This is our way of giving back. We also want all Aboriginal people struggling in Victoria to know they are loved and cared for.”

“More than a quarter of the people we serve are Aboriginal,” said Don Evans, Executive Director of OPS. “We’re honored to be part of this great gesture of generosity.”

Our Place Society is a community centre serving the poor, disabled, and homeless of Greater Victoria. At its location on Pandora Avenue, it serves over 1200 meals per day. OPS offers a place for people to shower, get clean clothing, participate in community programming, as well as gather and share a story with friends in a place of belonging. OPS has forty-five transitional housing units for the hardest to house in our region.
