Media Advisory – Campaign 2000 to Release 20th Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Canada

Toronto, Nov. 21, 2011 – Campaign 2000 will release its 2011 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty on Wednesday, November 23rd from 9am to 12pm at Ryerson University in Toronto. The event, A Campaign 2000 Retrospective, Breaking the Barriers: Working to Eradicate Poverty in Canada, marks the 20th anniversary of the annual Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Canada and will begin with a Media Conference at 9:00 am, followed by presentations from three panelists and a roundtable discussion on the next steps for poverty eradication in Canada.The 2011 report, Revisiting Family Security in Insecure Times, reflects on the state of child and family poverty 22 years after the unanimous House of Commons’ resolution to end child poverty in Canada by the year 2000 and two years after the unanimous House of Commons resolution “to develop an immediate plan to end poverty for all in Canada”. The report includes recommendations for the federal, provincial and territorial governments.

Speakers at the media conference include:

• Laurel Rothman – National Coordinator, Campaign 2000;
• Becky McFarlane – Mother, community worker, student;
• Alizeh Hussain – Interim Ontario Coordinator, Campaign 2000
• Gunnar Sewell – Campaign 2000 and porte parole (French spokesperson)

The report will be available at www.campaign2000.ca on November 23. Provincial report cards on child poverty are also being released in BC, Alberta, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Please note that Manitoba released their 2011 provincial report card on September 21.

The November 23 event is co-sponsored by Family Service Toronto (FST), Campaign 2000’s host organization. This is the first of several events leading to FST’s centennial in 2014.
