OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Sept. 18, 2007) –

What: AIDS Walk for Life OttawaWhen: Saturday, September 22, 2007 – 7pmWhere: Festival Plaza – City Hall

The AIDS Walk for Life is Canada’s most important national fundraising and awareness event for the community-based AIDS movement. In Canada, approximately 58,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS and as many as 4,500 people are newly infected each year. One person every two hours is being infected with HIV every single day. Approximately 3,000 people living with HIV/AIDS here in Ottawa and infection rates continue to rise. With no cure or vaccine currently available, prevention remains our only hope. This year marks the 17th annual AIDS Walk for Life in the city of Ottawa. The Walk will help to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS in Canada and raise much-needed funds to support our nine local programs and services that support people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in our community.

Our partner agencies include: Bruce House (lead agency), AIDS Committee of Ottawa, Hemophilia Ontario, Ottawa Interfaith Council on HIV/AIDS, Pink Triangle Services, Planned Parenthood of Ottawa, Snowy Owl AIDS Foundation, Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health and Youth Services Bureau.

Each year Ottawa hosts a candlelight walk and a memorial stop at the Human Rights Monument to honour and remember those how have gone before us, stand in support of those living with HIV/AIDS and light the way in hope for an end to the virus.

Join us in the Walk until there is no longer a need to walk. The Walk will do us good.

The AIDS Walk for Life is a project of the Canadian AIDS Society in partnership with the British Columbia Persons with AIDS Society, the AIDS Committee of Toronto, and community-based AIDS organizations across Canada.
