Media Advisory: A Nursing Call to Action to be released by National Expert Commission (June 18, 2012)

Ottawa, June 13, 2012 – The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) established a National Expert Commission in May 2011 to consult broadly and recommend ways to optimize nursing contributions to a health-care system that is being transformed in response to changing demographics, cost constraints, new research and technologies, and the demands of Canadians. On Monday, June 18, the Commission will release its final report, A Nursing Call to Action, at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time on the opening day of the CNA Annual General Meeting and Biennial Convention (Nurses: Movers & Shapers) in Vancouver. The Commission report includes recommendations about system-wide transformation of Canada’s health-care system, along with specific proposals for governments, health-care organizations and professions, and nurses themselves. Nurse-led solutions to many of Canada’s health-care challenges are front and centre in the report.

Commission co-chairs, Maureen McTeer and Marlene Smadu, will provide media with a background briefing on the Commission’s consultation process, its report and recommendations via webcast, in advance of the release of the report.

Nurses represent the largest professional group in Canada’s health-care system with 268,500 registered nurses working directly with individuals, families and communities in a wide variety of settings, and providing care in diverse locales and across the lifespan and continuum of care.
