Press Release

(Kahnawake – 4, Seskéha/August 2022)

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to advise the community that due to high concentrations of E.coli, swimming in the water by the falls in Tioweró:ton is not permitted until further notice. Additionally, recent water sampling in the Recreation Bay area has detected elevated levels of E.coli and residents are being advised that the beach is closed until further notice. Testing was conducted at the Onake dock area, and those water samples were deemed to be acceptable for continued recreational activities.

Water testing by Environmental Health Services of Kahnawake Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services has detected high level of the bacteria and will continue to monitor the water over the next few days.

As a precaution, Kahnawa’kehró:non are advised not to venture onto the water for both Recreation Bay and in Tioweró:ton. However, if you do, ensure that you do not fully submerge or ingest any water.

Water testing will continue, and updates will be provided to the community once they become available.
