Students and faculty at the University of Waterloo will now need to wear a mask in classrooms as the school introduces the requirement for indoor academic activities for the rest of the term.

Starting Wednesday, students and staff will be required to wear a mask during lectures, seminars, teaching labs, tests and exams, and “all other forms of academic instruction wherever it happens indoors,” said the school.

Students may also be required to wear a mask when meeting with teaching assistants (TA) or instructors, according to the university.

The school said it’s introducing mask measures in an effort to minimize disruptions during exams at the end of the fall term.

“Recently, we have seen increases in local COVID-19 hospitalizations, and there are emerging trends from test positivity and wastewater that suggest increasing levels of COVID in the community now and in the near future,” the school said on its website.
