MAY 29, 2025 – TREATY 1 TERRITORY AND NATIONAL HOMELAND OF THE RED RIVER METIS, Winnipeg, Man.
Today, Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth Sherry Gott released her office’s special report Natawihisowin Oci Maskikiya (Healing with Medicines): Findings from the First 18-Months of the Serious Injury Reviews and Investigations Program, which introduces findings from the Serious Injury Reviews and Investigation during its first 18-months of operation. Since the program launched on July 1, 2023, it has been a legal requirement for any individual who provides a reviewable service (child and family services, adoption, youth mental health, youth addiction, or youth justice services) to report serious injuries sustained by young people to the office.

As outlined in the report, the Serious Injury Reviews and Investigations Program aims to achieve three overlapping objectives: 1) promote the rights and best-interests of individual children and youth; 2) identify systemic issues and service gaps observed on aggregate; and 3) provide child-centred feedback to government to improve the effectiveness and responsiveness of services, inclusive of informing and improving prevention measures.
