Ottawa, ON –The Heart and Stroke Foundation congratulates the Liberal Party of Canada for its majority win in the 42nd federal election and looks forward to working together on issues that will improve heart health across the country.
“We applaud the health commitments the Liberal Party of Canada made in its election platform,” says David Sculthorpe, CEO, Heart and Stroke Foundation, “We are looking forward to its leadership on important issues such as placing restrictions on marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages to children.”
The Foundation also applauds the Liberals for singling out other priority areas that will benefit Canadians including implementing tougher regulations to eliminate trans fats and reducing salt in processed foods, as well labelling of added sugar on food products.
“Last year the Foundation released a position statement on sugar, urging Canadians to improve their diets and cut back on sugar consumption,” says Sculthorpe, “We are happy to see the government’s proposed improvements to food labels, with more information on added sugars, to help Canadians make healthy choices. We look forward to working with the government on this and other commitments.”
Other Liberal platform promises that could have a positive effect on the population when implemented include an increased investment to the Nutrition North program of $40 million over four years. As well, implementing plain packaging for tobacco products will be an effective intervention.
