Iqaluit, Nunavut – The Legislative Assembly’s hearings on the Nutrition North Canada Program will be televised live across Nunavut, beginning on June 1, 2011, at 1:30pm. Members of the Legislative Assembly have agreed to proceed directly into the Committee of the Whole for the duration of the hearings.

The Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a motion at its sitting of February 25, 2011, to invite witnesses to appear before the Committee of the Whole during the spring sitting of the House. The motion was moved by Ron Elliott, MLA for Quttiktuq, and seconded by Tagak Curley, MLA for Rankin Inlet North.“During the most recent sitting of the Legislative Assembly, I tabled information on food prices that was provided to me by concerned residents of my community,” said Dan Shewchuk, MLA for Arviat. “These hearings are an important opportunity for all MLAs to raise concerns directly with major stakeholders and the continued input of our constituents is essential.”

Senior executives from the North West Company, Arctic Co-operatives Limited and Arctic Ventures have confirmed their attendance at the hearings.

“My colleagues and I encourage all Nunavummiut to share their concerns and ideas for questions with us prior to the start of our hearings,” said Mr. Ningeongan. “I encourage Nunavummiut to send messages and suggestions for questions to the Legislative Assembly’s general information email at LegInfo@assembly.nu.ca.”
