Lake Country parks and public areas will be smoke-free in the new year.
A new bylaw that prohibits smoking in any public space, at or within 7.5 metres of any park, transit stop, common area or outdoor customer service area, or within 7.5 metres of any doorway, opening window or air intake of a building, comes into effect Jan. 5.
“The goal is to essentially be a smoke-free community,” said Holly Flinkman, human resources and safety manager for the District of Lake Country.
The only exception to the bylaw is the ceremonial use of tobacco in an aboriginal cultural ceremony.
The no-smoking bylaw refers to inhaling, exhaling, burning and carrying lighted cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, hookah pipes, electronic cigarettes, and any other smoking equipment that burns or vaporizes tobacco, marijuana or any other substance.
