IQALUIT, Nunavut (February 26, 2019) – In a plebiscite held February 25, Kugaaruk residents voted to continue the current system of liquor prohibition. Fifty-four per cent of voters were against moving towards a restricted quantities system for alcohol.
Under the Liquor Act, at least 60 per cent of voters are needed to change the status of a community from prohibited to restricted quantities.
“Kugaaruk will remain prohibited, but if at a later date residents wish to revisit the matter, a request for a new plebiscite can be sent to the Minister of Finance,” said Minister of Finance George Hickes.
The consumption, possession, purchase, sale or transport of liquor will continue to be prohibited in Kugaaruk.
