Kuujjuaq, Québec, December 1st, 2015 – The Kativik Regional Government (KRG) and Makivik help make Christmas dinner a little more affordable in Nunavik communities. Until December 31, 2015 under the Food and Other Essentials Program, Nunavimmiut will be able to buy whole turkeys and hams (2.5 kg and over) sold at local grocery stores for half the regular price.
“We’re always looking for ways to help reduce the high cost of living. It is especially heartening to be able to offer assistance at this time of year when we’re gathering with family and friends,” stated Makivik President Jobie Tukkiapik and KRG Chairperson Jennifer Munick.
Nunavik Cost-of-Living Reduction Measures are intended to promote healthy lifestyles and take into account Inuit traditions and culture. The funding for the measures is provided by the Québec government pursuant to the Agreement on the Financing of Measures to Reduce the Cost of Living in Nunavik signed with the Makivik Corporation and the KRG in December 2013 and in effect until March 31, 2017. The KRG is responsible for administering the implementation of the measures. For more information on all six Nunavik Cost-of-Living Measures, consulthttp://www.krg.ca/en/cost-of-living-program.
