Kivalliq Long-Term Care Centre (KLTCC) to welcome first Elders in late May

Press Release

Rankin Inlet, Nunavut (May 6, 2025) – The Government of Nunavut (GN) and service provider Tagjaq Corporation will be welcoming Elders to the new 24-bed Kivalliq Long-Term Care Centre (KLTCC) in Rankin Inlet starting the week of May 26.

To prepare for the centre’s first residents, attention has focused on ensuring a culturally-enriching, safe and comfortable facility that feels like home.

“We are on the verge of completing this important milestone in providing Long-Term Care closer to home,” said Minister of Health John Main. “We look forward to having Elders returning to the territory in the coming weeks.”

This state-of-the-art facility for Elders meets new national standards and is the first of its kind in the territory with 22 permanent beds and 2 respite beds. Each resident will have their own private bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, and every bedroom is equipped with ceiling lift to safely transfer Elders from their bed to a wheelchair.

The centre consists of two 12-bed wings, each with a dedicated bathing room with a specialized tub and integrated lift to ensure resident safety and comfort. In addition to antimicrobial touch surfaces throughout, the facility also includes a country food kitchen, rehabilitation gym, hair salon, multi-purpose room, quiet family spaces and a workshop for sewing, crafting and carving.

Starting May 26, three to four Elders will arrive each week from Ottawa on direct medevac flights coordinated by the Department of Health.

This milestone is part of the “Aging with Dignity in Nunavut” priority of the government’s Katujjjiluta mandate and helps us fulfill part of GN’s promise to “invest in providing care for aging Nunavummiut so our grandparents and parents can live their last years in dignity, closer to family in our territory.”
