Jan 17, 2022

Kangirsuk has been put on “red alert” after the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services says the community reported an increase in COVID-19 cases and “highly suspected” community transition.

On Friday, Kangirsuk reported only three active cases, according to the health board’s most recent case count. By Monday afternoon, it had not posted the number of cases that prompted it to move Kangirsuk to red alert.

The new restrictions include a “complete shutdown” of non-essential gathering and services. Kangirsuk is the eighth community to be put on “red alert.” The other communities include Kangiqsujuaq, Ivujivik, Kangiqsualujjuaq, Kuujjuaq, Puvirnituq, Salluit and Tasiujaq.

The rest of the region is under “orange-plus” restrictions, with most non-essential services closed, and only essential gatherings and visits permitted.
