COVID-19 case count climbs to 81 in Nunavut capital

Iqaluit city council has declared a state of emergency in response to the COVID-19 outbreak that arrived in Nunavut’s capital more than two weeks ago.

Council voted unanimously in favour of the declaration during an emergency meeting Monday afternoon.

The state of emergency will give the city access to “limited authorities” under the territory’s Emergency Measures Act, said Coun. Kyle Sheppard, who made the motion during the meeting.

“Given the seriousness with the state of affairs with community transmission of COVID-19 in Iqaluit, I will make a motion to declare a state of local emergency,” Sheppard said.
