September 08, 2015

The National Inuit Youth Council (NIYC), Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) and partners will hold a public gathering on Parliament Hill in Ottawa to Celebrate Life on World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, 2015.

Inuit suicide rates are more than 11 times higher than the Canadian rate, according to Health Canada. And 83% of these are people under 30 years of age.

The 9th annual lunchtime event will be hosted by Maatalii Okalik, President of NIYC, and Terry Audla, President of ITK. Performers will include singer/songwriter Saali, whose song “Sapiqangitunga” (I will not give up) has become an anthem of perseverance, country-gospel performer Etulu Aningmiuq, and students of the Ottawa Inuit Children’s Centre and the Nunavut Sivuniksavut training program.
