Information for Walk to END PKD

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic diseases, affecting approximately 1 in 400 to 1 in 1,000 people. Today, thousands of Canadians and millions of people worldwide live with PKD. There’s a good chance that most Canadians know someone within their circle of family, friends, or acquaintances who is affected by PKD.

PKD is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of cysts in the kidneys, leading to kidney enlargement, and often resulting in kidney failure. There is currently no cure for this life-threatening disease, and the only means of prolonging one’s quality of life in the later stages of PKD is dialysis or kidney transplantation.

The PKD Foundation of Canada is the only non-profit organization nation-wide dedicated to promoting research, education, advocacy, and support for individuals and families affected by PKD.

Through fundraising efforts – including our (upcoming in September) annual Walk to END PKD / March pour VAINCRE LA MPR – we hope to ultimately see a day when a cure is found for PKD.

Since 2007, the Walk to END PKD has raised more than $2,170,000 towards finding treatments and providing education and support services to those suffering from the disease.
