Indigenous Peoples GBA on Family and Community: AWHHRG GBA Workshop – Phase 2

Executive Summary

The development of an Aboriginal framework for gender based analysis (GBA) is a great priority for it promotes an Indigenous lens and allows for the development of programs and policies that are more inclusive, equitable and reflective of the needs of those most affected. The */Indigenous Peoples GBA on Family and Community/* (IP-GBA-FC) as named, defined and owned by the Aboriginal and Inuit women who participated in the Aboriginal Women’s Health and Healing Research Group (AWHHRG) GBA, Phase Two Workshop magnifies the Indigenous lens revealing women’s real priorities: healthy families and healthy communities.Participants exchanged thoughts and opinions on gender, sex, and socially constructed identities. They explored the revitalization of traditional world view as a way to address Aboriginal and Inuit women’s health, and exposed the impacts of colonialism and the imposition of patriarchal structures on Indigenous wellbeing.

The experience was described as having triggered a movement, or as one participant suggested, a /turning toward/ and /away from/. Although the workshop was limited by time constraints many indicated satisfaction with the accomplishments, and were appreciative for having the opportunity to develop national networks. All agreed the work was “cutting edge”, and that the momentum should not be lost. Furthermore, it was acknowledged that after this workshop that the time has come to bring men into the circle for future dialogue around the IP-GBA-FC.
