The Tŝilhqot’in National Government (TNG) has broken ground on its recovery centre being built west of Williams Lake.
First announced in August, Red Road River Tŝilhqox will be a publicly funded treatment centre rooted in Tŝilhqot’in traditions and open to anyone in the region on a journey towards recovery. Facilitated by Red Road Recovery, which also operates centres in Lumby, Sorrento and Salmon Arm, the centre’s programs will be residential, providing a safe place for those recovering from substance misuse to stay throughout their treatment as well as through pre and post-treatment.
“There are some really serious gaps in our system,” said Judy Ventry, project manager for the TNG’s Healing & Wellness Center project. Ventry has experience working as an outreach worker in Williams Lake, where she saw the real-life impacts of the toxic drug and housing crises. She said gaps such as a lack of supportive housing programs between withdrawal management and treatment, as well as long wait times for treatment, are where people often fall through the cracks.
